CISCO 2600 Router

INTRODUCTION

The Cisco 2620XM router I was given, was used for connecting geographically disparate small branch offices to head office. From the literature, I suspect this router was introduced in 2004. It's obsolete by today's standards, but as with most commercial hardware, it's still usable as a hobbyist router, given it's light network usage in a home environment. One drawback is that this will consume more power than a comparable consumer router.

2600 Router Features:

  • Multiservice voice/data integration
  • Virtual Private Network (VPN) access with Firewall options
  • Analog and digital dial access services
  • Routing with Bandwidth Management
  • Inter-VLAN routing
  • Delivery of high-speed business class DSL access
  • Cost effective T1/E1 ATM access
A powerful RISC processor along with high-performance digital signal processors and auxiliary processors on various interfaces, the Cisco 2600 Series supported the advanced quality of service (QoS), security, and network integration features.

There were several models of the 2600 series routers (2610, 2611, 2612, 2613, 2620, 2621, 2650, 2651 and 2691). Most models had two WAN Interface Card slots, one Network Module slot, and an Advanced Integration Module (AIM) slot. These slots shared more than 50 different modules across four Cisco product lines. Each model also had various performance profiles with the 2650 being able to handle 37K packets per second (pps).

The Cisco 2620 and Cisco 2621 can process up to 25K pps. It features one auto-sensing 10/100 MBps Ethernet ports, one Network Module slot, Two WIC slots, console and AUX ports with max speed of 115.2 KBps.

The "Cisco 2600 Series Modular Multiservice Router - Data Sheet" document, below, provides detailed information on the 2600 router's capabilities.

The router settings can be configured through a serial cable (RJ45 on one end and DB9 female on the other end). The cable can be purchased for a few dollars from Ali Express. In this case, the cable was attached to the Lenovo's T45 laptop COM1 serial port. The putty terminal emulator was used to extract the outputs below.

CISCO IOS COMMANDS

Below is a sampling of the commands available for the 2620 router and its responses.

Executive Command Set
Help may be requested at any point in a command by entering
a question mark '?'. If nothing matches, the help list will
be empty and you must backup until entering a '?' shows the
available options.
Two styles of help are provided:
1. Full help is available when you are ready to enter a
command argument (e.g. 'show ?') and describes each possible
argument.
2. Partial help is provided when an abbreviated argument is entered
and you want to know what arguments match the input
(e.g. 'show pr?'.)
