CISCO 3845 Router

INTRODUCTION

I received a 3845 router as a donation. This page is my notes for working with this model router. It is basically a holding area for my notes on using this device. This model router was announced in 2004. It's obsolete by today's standards. It features 10/100MBit Ethernet interfaces and a few Gigabit level interfaces. It's considered slow by today's standards, but provides good hands-on learning on Cisco's IOS firmware.

The Cisco 3800 series integrated services routers include the Cisco 3825 and Cisco 3845 routers. Both routers support WAN interface cards (WIC), voice/WAN interface cards (VWICs), high-speed WAN interface cards (HWICs), and advanced integration modules (AIMs).

Cisco 3845 routers provide 4 network module slots, labeled 1, 2, 3, and 4. Each slot supports any of the following modules: single-wide network module, enhanced single-wide network module, or enhanced extended single-wide network module. Slots 1 and 2 combine to support double-wide network modules or extended double-wide network modules. Similarly, slots 3 and 4 combine to support double-wide network modules or extended double-wide network modules.

Cisco 3845 routers also support 1 optional SFP slot, 2 built-in Gigabit Ethernet LAN ports, 2 built-in USB ports for future use, 4 single-wide or 2 double-wide HWICs, 2 AIMs, 4 PVDMs, 48 ports of IP phone power output, and hardware-based VPN encryption acceleration.

The integrated services routing architecture of the Cisco 3800 Series is designed to embed and integrate security and voice processing with advanced wired and wireless services for rapid deployment of new applications, including application layer functions, intelligent network services, and converged communications. The Cisco 3800 Series supports the bandwidth requirements for multiple Fast Ethernet interfaces per slot, time-division multiplexing (TDM) interconnections, and fully integrated power distribution to modules supporting 802.3af Power over Ethernet (PoE), while still supporting the existing portfolio of modular interfaces.

Cisco Integrated Services Routers provide advanced security services and management capabilities such as built-in hardware encryption acceleration, IPSec, VPN (Advanced Encryption Standard [AES], Triple Digital Encryption Standard [3DES], DES and Multiprotocol Label Switching [MPLS]), stateful firewall protection, dynamic intrusion prevention (Intrusion Prevention System [IPS]), and URL filtering support. Cisco IOS security feature sets enable all of these rich security features, as well as applications such as Network Admission Control (NAC), Dynamic Multipoint VPN (DMVPN), and Voice and Video Enabled VPN (V3PN).

For ease of management and configuration, the 3800 Series also features the intuitive, Web based Cisco Router and Security Device Manager (SDM) and Cisco Configuration Professional (CCP). For secure services management, every Cisco integrated services router supports Secure Shell Protocol Version 2 (SSHv2) and Simple Network Management Protocol Version 3 (SNMPv3) protocols to encrypt the management session.

More detailed information on the 3800 features is available in the "Cisco 3800 Series Integrated Services Router" document below.

The router settings can be configured through a serial cable (RJ45 on one end and DB9 female on the other end). The cable can be purchased for a few dollars from Ali Express. In this case, the cable was attached to the Lenovo's T45 laptop COM1 serial port. The putty terminal emulator was used to extract the sequences below.

CISCO IOS COMMANDS

Below is a sampling of the commands available for the 3845 Router. The command set is extensive.

IOS Router Commands
Help may be requested at any point in a command by entering
a question mark '?'. If nothing matches, the help list will
be empty and you must backup until entering a '?' shows the
available options.
Two styles of help are provided:
1. Full help is available when you are ready to enter a
command argument (e.g. 'show ?') and describes each possible
argument.
2. Partial help is provided when an abbreviated argument is entered
and you want to know what arguments match the input
(e.g. 'show pr?'.)

Below are the two home routers. I received four 2600 series routers, of which only two 2620XM (higher speed) were kept; the others were sent to recycling. Only one 3845 router was received. In the picture below, the top router is the 2620XM. It has its serial console cable connected to a Lenovo laptop. It sits atop the 3845 router. The 3845 router has 16 high speed ports (10/100 MBit). On the lower left hand side is the Gigabit Ethernet interface.
